Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a recently developed approach to wellbeing that uses gentle holds to balance what is called the craniosacral system.

CST has many similarities to osteopathy. But instead of a focus on just correcting structural problems it also concentrates on the energetic and emotional dimensions of a person.

The Upledger Institute, the leading organisation for the development and teaching of CST, explains:

"CST is used to locate and solve problems. It encourages your own natural mechanisms to improve the function of your brain and spinal cord, to dissipate the negative effects of stress and to enhance your general health and resistance to disease."

The craniosacral system extends from the head (cranium) to the end of the back (sacrum/coccyx).

At the center of this system is what is called cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid protects and gives life to the brain and spinal cord. Its pulse can be felt throughout the body through the fascia or connective tissue. Craniosacral practitioners monitor this rhythm and flow through the bones and soft tissue that encase it.

CST has a great reputation for helping many neuromuscular and musculoskeletal complaints. In particular, this modality can help with:

  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome
  • TMJ (jaw) dysfunction
  • Migraines and headaches

Craniosacral sessions are particularly good for stress relief. By soothing the nervous system, this therapy can help with exhaustion and overload in the body.
